The second edition of the notable academic contest “The Battle of the Brains,” which concluded in February 2018 in Ekiti State, Nigeria, has raised the standard for academic competitions nationally. This event was a brainchild of the National Youth Service Coordinator, Adebayo Azeez Adekunle, and built upon the resounding success of its first edition at the University of Ibadan in 2016. Notably, during the maiden edition, Azeez held the influential position of Financial Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students, playing a pivotal role in directing multinational attention towards the participating talents.
Reflecting on the competition’s inception, Olateju Aliyu, the 2016 Student Union Vice President, noted, “The inaugural ‘The Battle of the Brains’ was a groundbreaking shift in our educational approach. It encouraged intellectual curiosity and versatility among students, expanding beyond the confines of traditional classroom learning.”
The event’s latest edition in Ekiti State witnessed exceptional participation, with over 5,000 high school students being rigorously tested in a range of subjects from Mathematics to General Knowledge. Of these, only the top 20 contestants moved forward to the final rounds, leading to an exhilarating grand finale. Ajiwe Titilayo from Glory International School, Ekiti, emerged as the winner, followed closely by runner-up Odeleye Temitope from Aramoko District Commercial Secondary School.
Akin Oluwadare Jnr., the leader of the Aramoko Socioeconomic Summit Group and a key partner in this edition, emphasized the significance of the competition: “It’s more than a test of academic skills; it’s a platform for shaping the leaders of tomorrow and attracting global entities to our emerging talents.”
Adebayo Azeez Adekunle, the visionary behind this initiative and who played a critical role in its inception, expressed his global ambitions: “Our goal is to propel ‘The Battle of the Brains’ onto a global stage, nurturing the intellectual prowess of young minds across diverse cultures.”
With its significant impact in fostering a culture of comprehensive knowledge and intellectual excellence among students, “The Battle of the Brains” is rapidly evolving into a globally recognized platform for showcasing academic talent.
