The Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa has congratulated Professor Oladapo Ashiru on his re-election for second term as the first Black Secretary-General of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS).
Ashiru, a Professor of Anatomy and Consultant Reproductive Endocrinologist, was re-elected alongside other executive officers during the 2025 general assembly of the World Fertility Congress, held recently in Tokyo, Japan.
Ashiru will serve for another three years, an achievement that underscores his leadership and commitment to advancing global reproductive medicine.
His commendation was contained in a letter dated May 2 and personally signed by the Minister of Education, a copy of which was obtained by Nigerian Tribune.
The letter reads in part: “On behalf of myself and the Federal Ministry of Education, I extend warm congratulations and profound commendation on your re-election as the first Black Secretary General of IFFS.
“The historic achievement, being the first black person to hold this office in the 57-year history of the organisation is a moment of immense pride, not only for Nigeria but for the entire African continent.
“Your re-election is not only a testament to your exemplary leadership and your distinguished career in reproductive endocrinology, but also your deep commitment to advancing scientific excellence and global cooperation in reproductive health.
“Additionally, through your work, you have upheld the highest standards of scholarship and professionalism, bringing international recognition to Nigeria’s scientific community.
“The Federal Ministry of Education specially acknowledges your lifelong dedication to learning, research and mentorship.
“Your contributions continue to inspire a generation of scholars and practitioners in the field of medical sciences, your global status affirms the power of education and perseverance
“So, we thank you for your continued efforts in uplifting the scientific reputation of Nigeria and for your enduring contributions to knowledge and humanity, even as I particularly wish you more accomplishments in your service to the world.”
Ashiru, who also presides over the Africa Reproductive Care Society, is the founding President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria (AMSN).
