AHEAD of the primaries of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 National Assembly election, stakeholders and leaders in Edo North senatorial district during the weekend adopted a former lawmaker, Alhaji Momoh Abubakar as its consensus senatorial candidate.
At the meeting which held at the small town of Ivbiaro, Owan East Local Government Area and chaired by the party’s senatorial leader, Alhaji Kazeem Ozeto, the choice of Momoh, from Imiegba, Etsako East Local Government Area was made known by a former organizing secretary of the party, Mr Henry Tenebe.
Sequel to the Edo North’s meeting, the Edo State PDP chairman, Chief Dan Orbih had mandated Tenebe to lead the party at resolving and pruning down the number of aspirants seeking various elective positions in the district.
The former scribe’s diplomatic efforts yielded result at the senatorial level with the withdrawal from the race by Mr Pascal Ugbomeh, who was the party’s 2015 senatorial candidate, to support Abubakar’s candidacy.
An elated Momoh, a former two-term member of House of Representatives who was also present at the Ivbiaro’s meeting commended Ugbomeh for his magnanimity and show of support without conditions and the party’s leaders for their diplomacy in managing the party’s affairs.
By this arrangement, the forthcoming PDP primaries to elect the district senatorial candidate will now be to rectify to ratify Abubakar’s candidacy.
To dispel rumours and also to assure his teeming supporters of his gesture, Ugbomeh issued a press release to reiterate his withdrawal from the race.
The news about the adoption of Abubakar has generated jubilation by PDP supporters and well-wishers across party divides who felt Momoh’s good performance in offices Reps member will be repeated and improved upon across Edo North.
The state Publicity Secretary, Mr Chris Nehikhare confirmed the development, noting that the ex-lawmaker is the party’s only aspirant from Edo North senatorial race.
Nehikhare said: “Ugbomhe has withdrawn from the race. As it is now, the ticket is as good as Momohs. He is the only aspirant from Edo North. The issue of who flies Edo North ticket of our party has been settled. It is Momoh.”
