The wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has vowed to tackle malnutrition in the State and called on stakeholders to support her in her fight.
Mrs Nwifuru made the call during the 2023 Ebonyi Hidden Hunger Conference organised by the Ebonyi State Government in collaboration with USAID, WHO, and other development partners.
She noted that her office is determined to partner with relevant stakeholders to reduce the issue of malnutrition, which has tormented many people and sent others to their early graves.
She then charged community leaders to identify all malnourished patients in their localities and send them to various centres in the state for treatment.
The First Lady announced the establishment of a malnutrition referral centre at the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, and called on all and sundry to take advantage of the centre to address nutrition imbalance issues.
In their separate remarks, the state commissioner for Budget, Planning, Research and monitoring, Mrs Chinwe Okah, and her Health counterpart, Dr Moses Ekuma, represented by Dr Philip Ovuoba, lamented the high rate of malnutrition in society and assured that the state Government has done everything needed to fight the menace
Also, Hadiza Marcus, on behalf of Development partners, Prof. Chukwunonso Ejike, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, and other stakeholders suggested adequate enlightenment and collaborations as possible approaches to reducing hidden hunger.
The high point of the event was the presentation of the Golden Ambassador of Nutrition Award to the wife of the Governor and other merit awards to individuals who distinguished themselves in nutrition care in Nigeria, including Aliko Dangote, WHO, and USAID, among others.
