EBMC provides insights, practical solutions to business owners’ challenges

The 2024 president of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ibadan Elite chapter, Cynthia Akhagbeme-Simeon, has declared that the annual business masterclass of the organization, the Elite Business Master Class (EBMC), aims to help entrepreneurs and business owners establish solid structures and systems to help their businesses thrive.

This was revealed at the 4th edition of the EBMC, an event in partnership with the University of Ibadan School of Business, held on Wednesday at the CBN Building, University of Ibadan. The event was tagged “Establishing Systems and Structures in Businesses.”

In her opening remarks, Cynthia noted that the event was designed to educate entrepreneurs, business owners, and innovators. She emphasized its importance, especially given the challenging Nigerian economy, and highlighted that establishing solid business structures and systems is the bedrock upon which sustainable growth, innovation, and resilience are built.

“This masterclass event is aimed at helping entrepreneurs and business owners establish solid structures and systems to help their businesses thrive, as well as to educate entrepreneurs, business owners, and innovators within Ibadan,” she said.

She noted that the EBMC has always been selective with its speakers, choosing successful individuals who can provide insights and practical solutions to business owners’ challenges in Nigeria.

“It featured insights and strategies from distinguished panellists and industry experts, including CEOs and founders from renowned companies, who shared their expertise in the world of business,” she added.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Oluyemi Oloyede, CEO of UAC Foods, delivered an insightful presentation. He emphasized that every business owner automatically becomes a leader.

According to him, being a democratic leader doesn’t necessarily make one a good leader; rather, how one interacts with their employees determines their effectiveness as a leader.

“In reality, leadership can be lonely and challenging. Everyone looks to you for guidance, and your employees’ livelihoods depend on you. Accessibility is key—every employee should be able to speak with you.

This sets you apart from the rest of the bureaucratic Nigerian business industry. Being a democratic leader doesn’t necessarily make you a great or good leader,” he said.

He noted that business owners and entrepreneurs should target markets with consumers who have disposable income but should also prioritize their significant customers.

“Don’t go after markets for market’s sake; go after the people in the market. They have the disposable income that you need. Look for places where people have the money,” he concluded.

Other panellists at the event included Dr. Ayokunle Fatokun, Lead Consultant at Russel and Barnes; Ayo Winkunle, CEO of Techlytics Africa; Bamiro Oluwaseun, CEO of YNORTH and TIMETELLER NG; Engr. Goodness Morakinyo, Founder of Valencia Schools; and Kawthar Odukoya, Co-founder of Vanguard Pharmacy Ltd.

Each led different panel sessions with interactive discussions, educating and addressing business owners and entrepreneurs.

The special guest at the event was Chief Demola Ojo, Oyo State Commissioner for Trade and Investment.

Also in attendance were the Dean of the University of Ibadan School of Business, Professor A.O Adewuyi; Dr. Mrs Omitoyin, Deputy Dean, University of Ibadan School of Business; JCIN Amb. Segun S. Omotosho, Executive Vice-President S/W; Ibadan Elite 2020 President, JCI Senator Oluwakemi Irinoye; Ibadan Elite 2019 President, JCI Senator (Barr.) Sanmi Abiodun; JCI Senator Kayode Adedayo; and the CEO of Ibadan Entrepreneur Network, Mrs. Adenike Oyenike, among other stakeholders from JCI Nigeria, the academia, and the business industry.

While giving the closing remarks, the Ibadan Elite 2024 Director of Business, Timothy Oladeni, appreciated the guest speakers, participants, and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
