Motorists, students, civil servants and other commuters on the Ugbowo axis of Benin City, Edo State capital, were on Wednesday stranded as a late evening downpour left the area submerged.
As a result of the heavy flood, commuters had a hectic time going from the King’s Square (Ring Road) to Ugbowo or coming from the Ugbowo axis to the city centre as the flood caused a gridlock on the road, with no fewer than 40 vehicles were seen damaged along the Ugbowo highway.
Mostly affected by the gridlock were students of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, staff of the university Teach Hospital, UBTH and other intercity commuters plying that end of the Benin-Lagos Expressway.
Some daring o motorists who braced the erosion were stuck, thus compounding the worsening traffic situation
Expectedly, the neighbouring New Benin axis, Uselu Shell, Five Junction and New Lagos Road suffered the spillover effect of the traffic jam, with the centre of the city becoming chaotic.
Transport fares from King’s Square to the University of Benin equally increased from N100 to between N400 and N500.
Some residents and motorists who spoke lamented the situation and called on Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to urgently intervene in the erosion menace that has become a threat to life in the Ugbowo end of the city,e especially the Edaeiken area of Uselu, which was rendered completely impassable.
The commuters lamented that the Edo State Government had abandoned them to their fate despite their massive support and vote were given to the governor, adding that the flood issue in Ugbowo would cause major damage to the property except government intervened urgently.
