A don at the Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr Bayo Busari, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to list Oyo State among the states to benefit from the Federal Government’s financial support in the fight against the coronavirus also called COVID-19.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, Dr Busari also urged Buhari to include Oyo among the states to be locked down in a bid to arrest the further spread of the virus, warning that “leaving out the state will pose a dangerous threat to the efforts to flatten the curve of the spread.”
Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Ogun states were listed by the Federal Government for a shutdown in a presidential broadcast on Sunday evening.
The lecturer reasoned that state governments would be tasked financially in their efforts to halt the spread of the virus, stressing that “it is important that Oyo State benefits from the largesse that the Federal Government is making available to fight the COVID-19.”
Busari, who is also a public affairs analyst, said although federal and state governments were slow in responding to the scourge of the pandemic, governmental efforts so far were commendable.
He commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his efforts at the establishment of a coronavirus laboratory in the state, the very first by any state government in the country, in partnership with the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
“However, it is imperative that the Federal Government reviews its position on the lockdown, which only affects Lagos, Ogun and FCT leaving out Oyo, which has the third-highest reported cases.
“Equally, Oyo State was not captured in the palliatives announced for Lagos State and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) by President Muhammadu Buhari in his national broadcast,” he said.
