Doctors express concern on insecurity, welfare of members in South-West

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) South-West zone has expressed concern on the welfare of its members and the insecurity rampaging every nook and cranny of the country impacting their ability to carry out their statutory duties.

The doctors, in a communiqué, they issued at the end of one-day delegates meeting for Nigerian Medical Association State Branches of Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo, expressed displeasure also on its female members at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife, Osun State that were deprived of their call duty allowance while on maternity leave.

In a communiqué signed by Dr Ogunlaja Oladayo and Dr Bolaji Lateef Salako, the caucus chairman and secretary respectively, they urged the Federal Government to urgently institute measures to redress the unfairness dished out to its members by the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital and put a stop to this ugly situation.

They urged the Osun State Government to address the violation of rights of its members with fellowship qualifications by the authority of the Osun State University that in its advertisement for the appointment of Vice Chancellor for the institution requested only for candidates with PhD, asking that the institution learns from Lagos State experience on the same issue.

The doctors expressed dismay at the continued nonpayment, irregular and inappropriate salaries for doctors by Ondo and Ekiti state governments and urged them to pay its members their legitimate and outstanding salaries in order to put an end to the resultant undue financial stress.

According to them, the disposition of the Management of Primary Health Care Development Agency in Ekiti State to doctors leading the Primary Health Care centres in some Local Government Councils because of an arbitrary law that is not practised anywhere in the country is an unfriendly and unlawful attitude towards doctors and the medical profession as a whole that should stop.

While appreciating the Government of Ogun and Oyo States for their commitment to providing uninterrupted and sound health care services to the citizens, they called on Government at all levels and security agencies to improve on their efforts to ensure a safer country.

They stated that governments at all levels must always prioritize the Health care system of their States in the interest of the people and urged continuous support of doctors for the National NMA building project.
