Communities on the Olomu- Oviri-Egodor road linking Ughelli South and Burutu local government areas of Delta State can now heave a sigh of relief as the state government has determined to complete their eight-km road as scheduled.
The communities have been cut off from their neighbors, especially due to the topography which had impeded the completion of the road project.
Already, phase one of the project had been completed and inaugurated while the second phase of four kilometres is ongoing.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that some residents in the area who spoke during the inspection of the road by the Commissioner for Works, Mr Noel Omodon, commended the state government for the project, recalling their experiences traveling in pursuit of their daily living.
Omodon expressed satisfaction that the challenge of difficult topography militating against the contracting firm handling the project had been resolved.
According to him, the construction of the road is to open up the agrarian communities in the region to improve the socio-economic activities of the area.
He said: “My visit here today has been enlightening. I have seen few of the things that they have mentioned, I have also gotten the shot of the other end of the road, which means we have a fair understanding.
“I am very confident that this is a project we can easily conclude, because in the 2022 budget, we made a proposal to accommodate and complete this project. This is something we can easily complete.”
The site engineer of the company handling the road project, Mr Ken Sui, told the Nigerian Tribune that the remaining ongoing four-kilometre stretch of the road was a difficult terrain due to the rains.
He assured that with a review, the project would be completed in record time.
Residents of the community who are motorcycle operators on the road, Messrs Ebi Tebesa and Dickson Salome, lauded Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the road project, saying that before now the róad had been a major problem in the community but they were happy now the state government is constructing it to ease their suffering.
They appealed to the contractor to expedite action on the project by putting more men and machinery to complete the road project as scheduled.
