The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its support for the seamless operations of the Lekki Deep Sea Port as a key contributor to the national economy.
The Acting Comptroller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, gave this assurance during his first official visit to the port in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, on Wednesday.
Adeniyi stated that the NCS would provide all necessary support to Lekki Port to facilitate and boost trade in Nigeria in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service.
He highlighted the significance of the port as an avenue to generate foreign exchange, attract foreign investment, create jobs for Nigerians, and increase revenue for the government.
“We are coming with a shared understanding of what the Nigerian economy needs. We don’t need to look further than the investment we see here. We want to generate foreign exchange. We want foreign investment to come to Nigeria so that jobs can be created for our people and we can raise revenue.
What we are seeing holds the promise and potential to achieve those objectives. As an agency of government, we will continue to be a partner with a shared vision. When we work together on major policy decisions, we will overcome any major issue that may arise,” he said.
Adeniyi praised Lekki Port as a catalyst and game-changer that would contribute to Nigeria’s economic prosperity and serve as a massive source of revenue for the government due to its capacity to handle large vessels.
During the visit, the Managing Director of Lekki Port, Du Ruogang, expressed appreciation for the Acting Comptroller General’s prompt acceptance of the port’s invitation.
He congratulated Adeniyi on his appointment and expressed the port’s eagerness to cooperate with the Nigeria Customs Service to leverage technology and automation for more efficient customs operations.
Ruogang highlighted that Lekki Port is equipped with modern equipment and features similar to global ports in China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Tangier. He emphasized that smooth and efficient customs operations are crucial to attracting customers to the port.
Also, the Chief Executive Officer of the container terminal operator, Lekki Freeport Terminal, Mr Yann Magarian, shared the significant achievements of the terminal since commencing operations.
He noted increased productivity at Nigerian ports, faster container scanning processes, and the commencement of transhipment services, which are helping to restore Nigeria’s position as the maritime hub of West Africa.
Magarian commended the Federal Government of Nigeria and various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Customs Service, for their support in making Lekki Port a reality.
During the visit, the Acting CG and his entourage were given a tour of the container terminal, observing the ship-to-shore cranes and RTGs in operation, as well as the scanning machines.
