Not fewer than 1,501 cases of Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) were reported between January and June 2023 in Bauchi State, according to the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad.

Speaking at a one-day training on SGBV organized by the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Bauchi State chapter, the Commissioner of Police assured that the Command would actively collaborate with stakeholders in the state to tackle the menace of SGBV among innocent but vulnerable people.
He promised to explore all avenues to address SGBV in the state and to support the prosecution process of offenders.
The CP commended NAWOJ for organizing the training and urged journalists to use their platforms to sensitize women about SGBV, emphasizing that it must not be covered up.
In her welcome remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Mrs Rashida Yusuf Mohammed, appreciated the Commissioner of Police and other stakeholders for attending the training despite their tight schedules. She disclosed that 25 journalists from various media organizations in the state participated in the training.
Mrs Mohammed mentioned that the state’s administration signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act in 2022 to eliminate all forms of violence and punish offenders found guilty. The training aimed to equip women and journalists, to address cases of SGBV, which have become rampant in society.
DSP Ahmed Garba, the Gender Officer of the Command, revealed that between January and June 2023, no fewer than 1,501 cases of SGBV were reported.
Meanwhile, Mrs Esther Patrick, the Gender Officer of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, mentioned that a dashboard had been introduced in the Ministry for proper documentation of SGBV cases.
