A 30-year-old man, Ola Emmanuel, was on Wednesday sentenced to 24 hours of Community service by a family court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital of Osun for beating his 6-year-old boy with cable inflicting his body with injuries.
The defendant who was brought to Court by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, is said to have subjected the boy to regular torture and abuse by his father.
Trouble started at the residence of the father at No.2, Temitope Street, Oke-Onitea, Osogbo last Tuesday when the victim who was said to have been out of school due to the inability of his father to pay his school fees, ate the leftover beans cooked by his father before his arrival from work on this ill-fated fated day.
It was learnt that, after the father prepared the beans, he served the little boy his own portion and kept the remaining for himself to eat when returned from work but his hope got dashed when he returned home and discovered that his son had eaten the remaining kept food for his own consumption.
According to the prosecutor from the legal department of the NSCDC, the act is said to have infuriated the father resulting in beating silly out of the boy with cable and inflicted injuries on his body.
Seeing the brutal treatment meted on the child by the father, residents in the neighbourhood prevailed on the father to temper justice with mercy but when discovered that, their pleas were not considered, they contacted the Area Commander of NSCDC who subsequently arrested the father and was charged to court.
The defendants, however, pleaded guilty to the offence and were sentenced to 24-hour community service.
The court thereafter ordered the boy to remain in the custody of the Osun State Government children’s home.
Speaking after the Judgement, the Head, Anti-Human Trafficking, Irregular Migration and Gender-based Unit, of the NSCDC in Osun Command, a Chief Superintendent of Corps, Mr Onifade Clement has decried the prevalence of child abuse in the State advised parents and guardians to desist from child abuse in any circumstance.
The State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Emanuel Ocheja while commenting on the issue warned parents, guardians against any form of child abuse.
He urged the public not to relent in giving adequate and proactive information to the Corps for a prompt response.
