An Area Court II sitting in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered for the remand of a former Area Court Judge, Bashir Mohammed, in a correctional centre over alleged cheating and fraud.

The presiding Judge, Nuhu Musa Garta, issued the order when the former Judge who was accused of cheating one Bappa Alhaji Lawan, the sum of N730, 000, was arraigned before him, on Monday.

The former judge who is standing trial for cheating contrary to section 313 of the penal code law, was the Gombi Area Court Judge in Gombi Local Government Area of the state until his retirement 3 years ago.

The accused was charged for allegedly selling 3 plots of land thus; 100 x 50, 160×50 and 70×30 at the sum of N300, 000, N300, 000 and N60, 000 respectively to the complainant and also collecting N70, 000 for documents from him totalling the sum of N730, 000.

The complainant, who resides at the Rhumde Baru area of Jambutu, in Yola North Local Government Area later discovered that the said plots of land situated behind Air Force Comprehensive School were not the property of the defendant; hence, his complaint before the court.

The accused, however, pleaded guilty to the allegation levelled against him when the charge was read against him.

The presiding judged ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody, or produce a surety who will produce landed documents worth N400, 000 and deposit the sum of N350, 000 cash as bail conditions.

Hon Garta declared that the same land of the surety will be inspected by court officials, and adjourned the matter to the 27th August 2021 for corroboration of the plea entered by the defendant.
