Convention: Yuguda joins APC chairmanship race

Former Bauchi State governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has swelled the rank of aspirants for the position of national chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mallam Yuguda is from the same North-East geopolitical zone as the incumbent Yobe State governor and Chairman, APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala Buni.

Another chieftain from the zone who is equally in the race is former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

Mallam Yuguda hinted newsmen of his ambition on Thursday at the party national secretariat in Abuja.

“Well, I confirm that I have declared an interest. But I am still making consultations before my final decision as to whether I will contest or not,” he said.

He said his interest was to ensure that the ruling party sustain its capacity to win elections and remain united as one political family.

“Well, I have made myself available for Nigerians. I have paid my dues as a minister, governor and also managing director in the private sector in corporate Nigeria. I am re-offering myself again. So it is not a question of chance. If I am worthy, what I have done in the past is worthy of me being here to pilot the ship to take the party to greater heights and to successes, and to make Nigeria better, so be it.”

On the controversy trailing power rotation between the North and South, the former aviation minister said merit should not be sacrificed as he noted that there are competent individuals for the exalted seat of president in every geopolitical zone in the country.

“As far as I am concerned, power belongs to God. So you allow the Almighty God to chose at that time. But if you say this is your preference and that is not your preference. But for me, as far as I am concerned, we need a competent hand. There is no part of the country that doesn’t have competent people. Let us pray to God to bring them out for us so that they can run the country for us,” he said.
