Nigerian content creator, Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, died on January 9, 2026, after developing complications following fibroid surgery at a hospital in Lagos.

The family confirmed her death in a statement released via her Instagram page.

“We the family of Esther Thomas (A.K.A Sunshine), with pain in our hearts, regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved sister and daughter … who passed away on January 9, 2026, after an unsuccessful surgery,” the statement reads.

Sunshine had been suffering from severe stomach pain since late December 2025. She was initially treated at Orchid General Hospital in Lagos, where she received only pain relief due to a doctors’ strike.

As her condition became worse, she was transferred to another hospital on January 2 for further treatment. Medical tests revealed that Sunshine had a large fibroid, and doctors recommended surgery.

The operation was performed and initially reported as successful. Unfortunately, she developed complications afterwards, which led to her death.

“According to the doctor, the surgery was successful, but she later developed complications that led to her death,” a fellow content creator said.

Sunshine was well-known for her skits, modelling work, brand collaborations, and video appearances.

Her family is making arrangements for her burial and has asked friends and supporters to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
