Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Tuesday reiterated that the only solution to Nigeria’s security challenges remains community policing, saying the Amotekun corps has recorded remarkable achievements within a short period it was created.
Akeredolu stated this during the Passing out Ceremony of the 2nd Batch of Amotekun Corps and Commissioning of patrol vehicle for the security outfit in the state.
He maintained that community policing remains the only panacea to insecurity, saying it will allow individuals who understand the language and cultural diversity of their people to handle the security of lives and property.
He said crime is a local issue that should be addressed with a large dose of home-grown content, noting that the creation and establishment of Amotekun Corps has “further reinforced our long time view that state and community-based policing is the panacea to the country’s security challenges.
He said that the Amotekun Security Corps initiative is a baby of necessity conceived as a home-grown approach to solving the plethora of security challenges that have put the people on the edge.
“It is indeed heart-warming and encouraging because it is just a little over a year ago that the Amotekun Security Corps came into being and the impact it has made in this short period of time has been remarkable and has given us hope in the management of our security in Ondo State.
“Let me reassure the good people of Ondo State that our administration will leave no stone unturned as far as the implementation of our REDEEMED Agenda is concerned.
“The sixth goal of the Agenda which is ‘Maintenance of Law and Order for Adequate Security’ is the reason why we are here today. I enjoin all the good people of Ondo State to lend your cooperation in terms of providing credible intelligence and financial support towards the success of this initiative.
“Today’s event is one of the milestones recorded by our administration in our attempt to redeem Ondo State from the shackles of poverty, disease, and underdevelopment. These cannot be achieved without a sense of safety and peace.”
He commended the leadership of the agency for the brilliant efforts, urging them not to rest on their oars while he assured them of support to rid the state of criminal elements.
He also thanked the traditional rulers and community leaders for their immense support and cooperation and the leadership of all the security agencies in the state for their cooperation in tackling security challenges
The Amotekun Commander in the state, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, appreciated the support of the government and the people of the state, saying the corps will not relent in fighting crimes in the state.
