THE Imam of the Islamic Da’wah Group, Abuja, Shakirullah Badewa, has identified the root cause of the insecurity plaguing the country.
According to the scholar, lack of home training and proper child upbringing on the part of the parents have resulted in the security challenges that Nigeria is currently passing through.
Badewa stated this at the 15th annual Ramadan lecture/iftar programme of the Abuja chapter of the Obafemi Awolowo University Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA).
Speaking on the topic ‘Islam and Insecurity: The Way Forward’, the imam, who is also a security expert, said Allah, in the Holy Qur’an, defines the role of peace in human existence.
He said the holy book is proof of guidance from the Creator, noting that Islam and insecurity should not be on the same pedestal because while the former means peace, the latter is the direct opposite.
He stated that banditry, kidnapping, robbery and other social vices had been with mankind from time immemorial and Islam had come to put a stop to them.
Badewa said there was no nation without oppressors but it was the duty of the just and the Muslims to liberate the oppressed from the oppressors.
He urged Muslims to hearken to the command of Prophet Muhammad by forbidding evil and reporting it when they see one so as to promote a peaceful and decent society while calling on parents to teach their children about the sanctity of life.
Badewa, who was once a victim of kidnapping, said: “Most security challenges bedevilling Nigeria today started from our homes. A child who lacks proper home training and upbringing will not contribute anything meaningful to the community because you cannot give what you don’t have. A bad home breeds a bad society while a bad society breeds a bad nation.
“The way out of our security problem is the grassroots because the people who are perpetrating the evil and heinous acts today are among us. It is time to correct the ills of the society and promote justice.
“Our mothers have great roles to play in the lives of their children. We need a change of system and attitude to restore sanity in the polity and come back to Almighty Allah for solutions.”
Earlier, the chairman of the Abuja chapter of UNIFEMGA, Alhaji Ismaila Okunlola, said it was the mission of the association to establish Islamic brotherhood through scholarships, da’wah and empowerment for indigent students.
He said about 759 students had benefitted from the association’s scholarship awards and the indigent support fund which had gulped the sum of N42.7 million since the inception of the association.
