Classical scholarship influences African literature – Florida varsity study reveals

Published by

A new study by Kariola Mustapha of the University of Florida has affirmed that classical scholarship has had a significant influence on African literature.

The study highlighted how African writers have drawn on classical sources to create new works of literature, which provide a pathway to cross-cultural understanding, dialogue, and exchange between Africa and the West.

The study found that African authors have adapted classical texts in creative and innovative ways, demonstrating the global reach and context of African literature.

The study also emphasised the importance of recognizing and studying the classical influences in African literature, which adds depth and complexity to the understanding of African literary traditions. This understanding can help bridge the gap between different cultures and promote cross-cultural exchange and dialogue in the West.

In his research, Kariola notes that the study “highlights the influence of classical scholarship on African literary works. By exploring the adaptations of classical texts by African authors, the research demonstrates the ways in which African literature engages with classical themes, forms, and sources. This not only enriches the understanding of African literature but also contributes to the broader discourse on literary influence and intertextuality.”

The study provided a unique opportunity for scholars, educators, and students in Africa and the West to engage with African literature and classical scholarship, promoting cross-cultural understanding and exchange.

By recognising the significance of classical scholarship in shaping the literary traditions of Africa, the study offers a pathway to a more diverse, inclusive, and culturally rich West.

The study’s findings have the potential to impact the way African literature is taught and studied globally. The study shows that African literature is not isolated from the Western tradition, but rather is deeply engaged with it.

This understanding can help to break down barriers between cultures and promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
