Why we brought first comedy themed FM station in Nigeria to Ibadan?
Well, truthfully, we sought for a license in Lagos. It was in that quest that we got an opportunity to buy over an existing license howbeit, for Ibadan. Also, looking at the statistics for Ibadan i.e. the largest city in West Africa, a cultural place with an interesting mix of people, one will see that Ibadan is not a bad place either. Moreover, laughter is a universal language.
What is thirtytwo fm?
thirtytwo fm is a contemporary, humour themed radio station, dedicated to spreading laughter across the world. Our name, ‘thirtytwo’ exudes our essence. A typical adult has thirtytwo teeth and when he/she laughs, the thirtytwo is on display. In the local parlance, we can say thirtytwo means fehin e (open your teeth).
Why a dedicated humour themed station?
The world today seems to suggest that we have more reasons to frown than to smile, to complain than be grateful, to yell than to laugh. The world has thus been blinded to the many fun-filled moments that make life richer. We are here to bring humour to the airwaves and smiles to your hearts.
Why Ibadan and not Lagos?
It was Tunji Abioye the MD’s decision to make. Lagos is still in the picture.
You have some of the biggest comedians in the city on your roaster. Will that not bring about competition amongst them?
Life is all about competition you know as long as it is a healthy one. We have great contents and it is only reasonable that we have the best talents to match. What we have been able to successfully do is create a platform where these comedians can collaborate and in turn grow and then positively impact on the station.
Tell us a bit about your programming? What should your listeners look forward to from your station?
Like I earlier said, our mandate is to dominate sadness and fill the air with laughter and so our programs have been divided into two broad categories to address that. Firstly, we have Laughter for the soul; here, we have programs intended to crack the ribs of the listeners e.g “Ijo Lori Afefe” by Woli
We also ensure that all our programs from news to entertainment to sports etc, reflects top notch quality and is in tune with our essence. We also have the likes of Kiki, Yello Sisi, May9ine, Andre and more in our mist.
Critics say most radio stations are about profits and wallet share so are not really concerned about content and quality programming. Is this true?
That question is quite interesting. You see, there is a knowledge gap. People don’t listen to radio stations because they love the name or the founder. They listen because of the content. So, if you get the content right, money will come. So, the moment a radio station deviates from feeding its audience with the right content, they would lose the people and ultimately the profits. Yes, many radio stations have the wrong focus and that’s why they don’t last.
How does your station intend to change that perception if you disagree?
Content! What we have isn’t just a radio station, it’s a revolution. The country is blessed with many reasons to frown and we are here to ensure laughter on the faces of people. To this end, we have a line up of quality programs backed up with data towards solving that need. As long as we keep our content grass green, the sheep (in this case, listeners) will gather.
Are you looking to site other branches of the station across nigeria or only Ibadan?
We intend to spread laughter across the world, so, Ibadan is only the beginning.
You have become a mentor to many in Ibadan and beyond as regards radio programming and in media/advertising landscape generally. What would you attribute as your staying power?
Passion! I love what I do. Secondly, Vision! I think beyond the now. Many things I do today, I foresaw years ago.
