The Youth Coalition for Education-Nigeria (YOCEN), a pan-Africa development-driven initiative, Nigeria chapter, has conferred its award of excellence on the Vice-chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Professor Joshua Ogunwole.
Speaking at the award ceremony, held at the Senate building of the university recently, the Secretary-General of the organisation, Comrade Yakubu Nurudeen Yahaya, described the five years infrastructural and academic development of Bowen University under Professor Ogunwole’s administration as awesome, which he said informed the body to recognise him as a visionary and leader of repute.
“We found Professor Ogunwole to be a role model and a mentor whose dedicated services and commitment towards nation building, especially in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on education are outstanding and his ingenious strives are indeed admirable, recognized and appreciated by YOCEN-Nigeria.
“These are few among his strives that warranted this honour on him, for he has proven himself to be a man of charisma who can stick out his neck for the cause he believes in.
“YOCEN, Nigeria and the entirety of African Students/youth have recognised him as a man of courage who has zero tolerance for ineffectiveness; a seasoned intellectual with passion for continental renaissance, a noble champion who is known for his effective service delivery.”
He said Professor Ogunwole had established an indelible mark in the educational sector and posterity would continue to remember his incredible contributions to humanity and society at large.
In his response, Professor Ogunwole thanked the organization for its recognition and its willingness to celebrate with Bowen University’s achievements.
He reiterated that the future of Nigerian tertiary education rests on private universities.
According to him, every private university ensures that students are exposed to quality education with character.
He noted that if a nation must be elevated, it must embrace quality education with virtues, saying that it is only the private universities that seem to be ready to impart virtues and constructive education to students.
Continuing, he noted that government should put in place education policies that would promote access to quality education with character in public and private universities in the country.
“Bowen has had a wonderful experience in the last five years in terms of physical development and academic programme advancement all attributable to team work with my principal officers.
“Bowen University will continue to wax stronger in its bid to be a foremost university in Nigeria.
“I wish YOCEN success in all its activities not only in Nigeria but also in other African countries,” he said.
