Bowen University, one of the private faith-based universities in Nigeria, established by the Nigerian Baptist Convention to add moral value to university education is celebrating its 20 years of uninterrupted academic calendar in the university education system in Nigeria.
In view of this development, on Monday, the senior staff and principal officers of the institution led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatosin Atobatele assembled to release the anniversary Balloons to jubilate the epoch event.
Professor Atobatele, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Joshua Ogunwale at the opening ceremony of the programme scheduled for the anniversary, affirmed that the success story of Bowen University was centre on its ability to inculcate moral value and the assurance of academic stability in Nigeria since inception.
While addressing the newsmen at the occasion, Professor Atobatele noted that not less than 13,000 had passed through the academic and research programmes of Bowen University since it started in 2001 and that the academic excellence being offered on the campus had earned the students a series of international and national awards in the various intellectual competitions they ever engaged themselves annually. Lecturers and the university itself were not left out in these feats.
He declared that Bowen University is a growing private Ivory Tower in terms of physical development and academic advancement, as it would not run any course without accreditation.
According to him, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has just approved the establishment of 14 new programmes for the university. He added that the university has not relented in its efforts to make quality education accessible to brilliant but indigent students through its annual scholarship programmes, as it also extends its community service to its neighbouring towns in terms of physical developments and health support programmes.
He said: “ Bowen University is pioneering excellence among other universities in the country. For instance, Bowen University is the first-ever in the country to shift from face to face learning process to virtual learning process.
“However, though, one of the major challenges facing the university is the issue of funding, the university is struggling to find more other means of generating fund for the institution, aside from the tuition.
On this note, it will not be out of place for Federal Government to extend the TETFUND opportunity to private universities in the country for research services. The development would go long way to enhance national developments.”
