Bishop Adekunle blasts politicians empowering youths with motorcycles

Bishop of Egba Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Right Reverend Emmanuel Adekunle has said distributing motorcycles as a form of empowerment to unemployed Nigerian youths was nothing but deceit, and should be discouraged.

He said this in his sermon at the 80th birthday anniversary of the Olu of Igbein, Oba Festus Makinde, organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State chapter.

According to him, politicians should invest in technical education to grow the economy.

“It is common among politicians that after taking their constituency allowances, they do some form of empowerment by giving out grinding machines, motorcycles, sewing machines. Grinding machines for widows and the elderly is not bad. Empowering unemployed youths with motorcycles is not good for our economy.

“If we want to grow our economy, we need to grow our lower and middle manpower. Let our politicians invest in technical education. Majority of these okada riders after close of work in the evening, turn out to be marauders,” he added.

He described the celebrant as an upright and hardworking man, advising him to be more dedicated to the service of man and humanity.

The state CAN chairman, Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, in his address, stated that the monarch deserved the honour for his contributions to the association.
