The Member representing Ikuwano/ Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Samuel Onuigbo, on Tuesday, said that a bill for an act for the mainstreaming of climate change action that would give it a legal framework is now awaiting concurrence at the Senate.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Onuigbo who sponsored Bill expressed optimism that when passed by both chambers of the National Assembly the Bill would get the President’s assent.

He said that the objective of the bill was to ensure that Nigeria had a legal framework that would help coordinate her efforts at climate change mitigation and adaptation.
He said that although the bill was passed by the 8th National Assembly and duly transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari but was declined assent due to a number of reasons.
According to him, “I am happy that on July 6, during the committee of the whole at the House of Representatives, our report was considered and adopted.
He said that the bill was passed by the House and would now be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence.
Hon Onuigbo added that the lawmakers were aware of the danger of climate change, adding that this motivated him to sponsor the Climate Change Bill in the 8th Assembly.
According to him, the objective was to ensure that Nigeria has a legal framework that will help coordinate her efforts at Climate Change mitigation and adaptation.
He further explained that as an important arm of Government, it was the duty of the Legislators to make laws that would help the executive realise its goals and its promises to the people.
He added that the bill was part of its contribution to aid the President, and the government to achieve its goal and promise of fighting Climate Change.
