BAUCHI State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, has lamented that despite government’s efforts at improving health services in the State, some women were still giving birth at home, a situation he described as unfortunate and worrisome just as he expressed worry over the persistently high rate of maternal mortality and child morbidity in the North East region of the country.
The Governor stated this at the inauguration of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) campaign held at the Government House in Bauchi declaring that his administration will not rest until the situation changes positively.
The MNCH campaign which is championed by the Wife of the Governor, Hadiza Abubakar is aimed at strengthening primary health care centres, routine immunization, reproductive health, maternal, newborn and child health as well as nutrition services in the state.
Mohammed Abubakar said that: “We have seen the number of the percentage of women in the North-East part of the country who deliver their babies at home and Bauchi state is leading the pack in the region in that regard.”

“I must say that there is a lot of work to be done in order to ensure that we keep every child alive in Bauchi State. Our administration is committed to ensure that pregnant women have access to antenatal care services and deliver from skilled birth attendants,” he further said.
While speaking earlier, the Wife of the State Governor, Hadiza Abubakar said that the aim of the meeting was to engage women in authorities to come up with innovation that will reduce the number of Newborn and child death in the State.
She also said that health centres in the State were equipped with life saving drugs, adding that despite all the efforts of the government to render quality healthcare services, the state recorded slow progress in the reduction of maternal, newborn and child death.
