Some aspirants of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have kicked against the emergence of Honourable Femi Julius as the party’s consensus candidate for the Saki West Constituency in the State House of Assembly.
The aspirants warned that choosing Julius as the party’s candidate may spell doom for the party in the 2023 general elections.
As against consensus, the aspirants called for the conduct of party primaries to determine the candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections.
Among House of Assembly aspirants who made this call were, Barrister Hassan Ajibade, Mr Adekunle Koleosho, Mr Ayuba Bagbansoro, Mr Olabode Adeniyi, Mr Muizudeen Moshood Agbarikewu, Mr Seyi Olanrewaju, Mr Aderogba Malik Adedayo and Mr Adekola Wahab Sikirullah.
They urged Governor Seyi Makinde and stakeholders to allow primaries as it has been agreed for some state constituencies across the state. The aspirants warned that returning Femi Julius for a second term will be a great mistake.
They made reference to the 2019 general elections, saying Julius only won with a small margin with the help of the coalition agreement between the PDP and other political parties.
The statement read in part:
“We are not in any way in support of the imposition being regarded as consensus arrangement which led to the emergence of Honorable Femi Julius as the candidate of the party for Saki West State Constituency.
“To start with, Honourable Julius is not an indigene of Saki. He hails from Eruwa in Ibarapa East Local Government. Sons and daughters of Saki will not for the second time make another mistake of re-electing him. Forcing him on us as a candidate will spell doom for the party in the 2023 general elections.
“While we commend Governor Seyi Makinde for his laudable projects in Saki and by extension Oke Ogun, we want to urge him and other leaders of the party to allow us to go to the poll to pick our candidate as he allowed Ibadan North I and II State Constituencies and others.”
