Authorities of the High Command of the Nigeria Army has threatened to close down the two Command Secondary Schools in Kebbi State for the failure of the state government to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) since the schools were established some years back.
This was the message of the General Officer Commanding Army Crops of Education, Major General Muhammad Lawal Augie when he paid a courtesy visit to the State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu on Monday in Birnin-Kebbi.
Gen. Augie stated that since the establishment of the two Command Secondary Schools the Kebbi State government has not deemed it necessary to sign the Memorandum of Understanding, thereby preventing the Army to take total control of the schools.
He added that except the state government signs the MOU the two schools, it remains the property of the state government and as such the Army would not be able to assert its authority over the school and there is no way Army can provide the necessary amenities to make the school functions as Command Secondary Schools.
“As General Officer Commanding Army Education Corps and as an indigene of the state, it will be sacrilegious for me to see the collapse of the schools under my watch, this is why I am in the state to convey the decision of the Army High command to the state government for prompt action,” He said.
He urged that the MOU must be signed so that the schools would start to enjoy all the benefits the Army provides for Command Secondary School across the country or else the schools would be collapsed and school feeding will increase and parents may be forced to withdraw their children and wards.
Responding, the State Deputy Governor, Col. Samail Yombe Dabai (rtd) who spoke on behalf of the governor assured that the MOU will be signed immediately to solve the lingering teething problems.
He told the visiting officer that the state boast of an erudite educationist as the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, adding that the Commissioner and his team are up to the task and the MOU will be signed immediately.
