Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Sector 2 of Operation FASAN YAMMA has recorded significant operational successes in the fight against banditry and terrorism across the North-West, recovering hundreds of arms, rescuing over 1,000 kidnapped victims, and neutralising several criminal leaders.
The achievements were disclosed during the 2025 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA) held at the 8 Division Headquarters, where senior military officers, traditional rulers, government officials, and families of troops gathered to celebrate the year’s accomplishments.
Speaking in his remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, described WASA as a long-standing Nigerian Army tradition that allows troops to de-stress, celebrate cultural diversity, and strengthen camaraderie after a year of intense operational engagement.

He welcomed the Special Guest of Honour, Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Security, retired Colonel Ahmed Abdul Usman. The GOC also paid tribute to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, and other traditional and community leaders for their continued support.
Tracing the history of WASA, the GOC explained that the event dates back to 1901, following the incorporation of Nigeria into the West African Frontier Force, to accommodate the diverse cultural backgrounds of West African soldiers.
He noted that unlike previous editions usually held in January, the 2025 WASA was conducted earlier in the year, marking a notable shift in tradition.
Highlighting operational achievements, the GOC revealed that from January to date, troops of 8 Division recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, 4,338 rounds of ammunition, 305 motorcycles, and 4,123 livestock, while 1,023 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.
He added that sustained operations under Operation FASAN YAMMA led to the destruction of terrorist enclaves, the elimination of several bandit leaders, and a drastic reduction in criminal activities within the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
“These successes have restored confidence among the populace and boosted economic activities, as farmers and traders now access areas previously considered unsafe,” he said.
The GOC further disclosed that the Division established and deployed special force task units capable of conducting high-impact strike-and-destroy missions, significantly improving operational effectiveness.
Beyond security operations, he said the Division prioritised troop welfare and infrastructure development, including the renovation of accommodation blocks and the upgrade of medical facilities. Additional healthcare professionals were also engaged to cater to troops and their families.
He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, and the Theatre Commander of Operation FASAN YAMMA for their unwavering support, as well as the governors of Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara States for their cooperation.
Looking ahead, the GOC reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to consolidating gains in the coming year, in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy of building a professional, combat-ready, adaptable, and resilient Nigerian Army.
He also urged personnel to remain disciplined, professional, and security-conscious, calling on them to promptly report any suspicious activities.
In his remarks, the representative of the state governor, Col Ahmed Usman (rtd), commended the Nigerian Army for its unwavering commitment to a peaceful atmosphere through Operation FASAN YAMMA.
He assured that the state government will continue to support the army in its efforts to ensure its troops emerge victorious.
The colourful WASA 2025 celebration featured cultural displays, music, and social interactions among officers, soldiers, and their families, marking a symbolic winding down of the year and a celebration of resilience, unity, and service.
