Angry youths raze community chief, ex-headmaster’s houses in Imo

At least two houses and other properties belonging to a community chief and a retired headmaster have been set ablaze by suspected angry youths of Etekuru of Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident occurred between 12 am and 1pm last Thursday when the angry youths, in a revenge attack, stormed the houses of the community chief and the retired headmaster, and burnt them down.

The houses which belonged to the community Chief of Etekuru, Chief Kenneth Okereke and a retired headmaster, Mr. Magnus Mmanweoke, were razed barely few days after the youth clashed with soldiers in the community, leading to the death of a soldier.

The cause of the attack, Tribune Online gathered, was based on an alleged accusation that the community chief was the one who reported the youth to security personnel after they had allegedly killed a soldier.

Based on the report, the men of Nigerian military mobilized themselves to the community and razed down many house belonging to those that were involved in the killing of the soldier.

Tribune Online also gathered that the youth had confrontation with soldiers in the community earlier on and that warranted them to lay ambush on the soldier.

The youth during their ambush killed the solder and took away his rifle.

When contacted the Army Public Relations Officers of the 34 Artilary Brigade Obinze, Captain Joseph Akubo, declined comment on the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Police Command, CSP Michael Abatham, confirmed the incident, adding that already no arrest had been made but investigation regarding the incident had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
