Alleged attack on Oba Akinropo: Yoruba group flays Oluwo, asks Ooni to broker peace

A Yoruba youth group, Yoruba Youths Assembly (YYA), has flayed the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, following an alleged attack on the Agbowu of Ogbaagbaa, Oba Dhikrulahi Akinropo, at a peace meeting in the state recently.

The group asked the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, to broker peace between the two monarchs, adding that engaging another Oba or anybody in public is wrong and wrong.

Recall that the Oluwo was reported to have attacked Oba Akinropo during a peace meeting held at the office of the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zone 11, Mr Bashir Makama last Friday. Oba Akinropo was subsequently rushed to the hospital.

But the group, in a statement jointly signed by its National President, Comrade Thomas Olarinde, and National Public Relations Officer, Comrade Nathaniel Oduyemi, asked that a panel made up of eminent personalities be constituted to critically look into the matter.

The group also warned politicians not to see the occurrence as an avenue to fan embers of discord in the sacred Yoruba traditional institution.

The statement reads in part: “This incident saddens our heart and we frown at such alien development in our land, ‘land of the Omoluabis’. Such an act is capable of desecrating the traditional institution which has been kept sacred for so long by our forebears.

“Cultured youths under the umbrella of the Yoruba Youths Assembly, hereby, use this medium to call on His Imperial Majesty and Chairman, Council of Obas in Osun State, Oni of Ife to quickly wade in on the issue so as to prevent a future repeat of such a horrible act.

“It is very wrong for any Oba to engage another Oba or anybody in public because they are the symbols of peace and the eyes of the gods.

“We are calling on Oluwo of Iwo to apologise to all Yorubas and we appeal to the gods for his misconduct. We are also calling on governor and Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi to lead a bold step to ensure this does not happen again in Yoruba land.”
