Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly lawmakers have concluded screening on six Commissioner-nominees transmitted to them by Governor Udom Emmanuel to fill vacant positions left following the resignations of some key members of the State Executive Council (SEC).
The Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Pastor Umo Eno, tipped by Governor Emmanuel, as his would-be successor; Dr Glory Edet, Commissioner for Agriculture, who is vying for Ikono/Ini federal constituency seat and Prince Ukpong Akpabio, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, who is angling for Essien Udim state constituency seat in the House of Assembly, are expected, according to the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Conrade Iniobong Ememobong, to be “eased out of the cabinet to pursue their respective political interests”.
They would join Mr Akan Okon, erstwhile Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport who had resigned to pursue his governorship ambition.
Besides, Pastor Sunny Ibuot, the immediate past Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Manpower Planning, had earlier resigned to take up the position of Director General (DG) of the campaign organisation of his long time ally, Senator Bassey Akpan, who is angling to succeed governor Emmanuel, in 2023.
However, the stage is set for the inauguration of the six screened and cleared nominees today (Friday) at the Executive Chambers of the Government House, Uyo.
To be sworn-in include Dr Bassey Okon, from Itu Local Government Area, to replace his kinsman, Akan Okon, who quit to run the governorship race; Dr Offiong Samuel Offor; from Ini Local Government Area, is expected to replace Dr Glory Edet, outgoing Commissioner for Agriculture, while former Security Aide to the governor, Captain Iniobong Ekong (rtd), recently elevated to the rank of Commissioner, will replace his kinsman from Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Pastor Eno, who is being eased out as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources to pursue his governorship ambition.
Others include Mr Abiefiok Nkom, from Ikot Ekpene Local Government, who will take over from his kinsman Pastor Ibuot, the former Commissioner for Labour, Productivity and Manpower Planning; Mr. Bob Almond Emem, from Onna Local Government Area, who is to replace the former Chief of Staff (CoS), Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, who was relieved of his appointment to pursue his Senate race for Eket Senatorial District.
However, the Speaker, Mr Aniekan Bassey, who presided over the plenary session forwarded the names of the six officials to the Clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren, for onward transmission to the governor after they were given clean bill by the House Committee on Justice, Judiciary, human rights and public petitions chaired by the lawmaker for Mkpat Enin, Mr Victor Ekwere.
