Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar, has listed areas of priority to the new Minister of Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor.
He said the focus of his administration while as minister on Ogoni clean-up led to tremendous successes and charged the minister along similar lines.
He noted that climate change was another area of national concern and focus which has led to the redefinition of the environment sector.
Mahmood said this at the handing over ceremony to the minister of state, Sharon Ikeazor who took charge as directed by the president who sacked two ministers last week.
Mahmood who was the immediate past minister of environment, following his deployment to take charge of the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that Ogoniland clean-up was for the ministry and nation a major success in the two years that he supervised policy formulation and direction in the ministry.
“We have achieved so much in the last two years in terms of programs, projects and especially policies that have now changed the narration of the sector much more positively.
“We have brought people together to understand the importance of the environment. I can say that the last two years has been very much worthwhile.”
While receiving the hand-over document, Ikeazor, assured that the affairs of the ministry will be highly protected and developed under her watch.
She stated that: “We all serve the same government, and we all serve at the pleasure of Mr President. Just as the Minister has said duty calls him to another ministry, and duty calls me to stay here, and take charge of the affairs of the ministry of the environment until the president, at his pleasure, calls me elsewhere.
“So I thank you for our good working relationship which will definitely continue. And to the directors as well, I ask that the same support that was given to my brother continues.”
