As part of efforts at supporting victims of the Agbor gas explosion, which occurred on January 22, 2021, the Onu Ika Gas Explosion Committee has raised over N20 million for the victims.
The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Chief Patrick Ukah, who disclosed this while presenting the state government’s cheques to the victims in Asaba, commended the Committee members for their efforts in raising the money as initial support adding that the committee had lived up to its ideology.
Chief Ukah noted that the sad event was traumatic and that the state government had earlier rendered assistance to the affected persons, which included the settlement of hospital bills and several other support efforts to assist the survivors.
“Our gathering today is simply to show government’s empathy to the situation of the families of the bereaved,” he added.
The SSG assured residents of the state that the government was looking into the report from the committee which was set up to find out the cause of the explosion and would implement its recommendations to ensure that there was no reoccurrence of such disaster in the state.
Leader of the delegation, (the Ika gas explosion committee) at the ceremony, Elder Dan Usifo, appreciated the kind gesture of the state government.
Elder Usifo recalled that the state Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, and his entourage went physically to see what happened immediately the incident occurred and since then government had not relented in providing support for the victims and their families.
