AFAN wants government to develop agriculture to encourage youth participation

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on the government to develop the agriculture sector so as to encourage graduates and youths’ participation.

Vice President, AFAN Osun State chapter, Mr. Moses Oladipupo, made this appeal while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, on the challenges faced by farmers in sustaining food production in Nigeria.

According to him, the government at the federal, state and local levels needs to do more to encourage farmers, especially youths to go into agric business, in order to maintain and sustain food production in the future.

He said: “farmers nowadays are mostly aged men and women who live in the rural areas which do not encourage the youths, knowing the kind of hardship these farmers are facing.”

Oladipupo noted that the Federal Government has been reeling out policies and programmes to improve the agricultural sector, but farmers, especially in Osun, are yet to benefit from them.

He further called on the state government to help farmers reduce the stress they undergo in marketing their produce after harvest.

Meanwhile, in a bid to encourage and make agriculture attractive to youths and young graduates, AFAN in the state has taken it upon itself to put in place programmes that will convince them to participate in the sector.
