The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, describing the decision as a demonstration of statesmanship and a leadership style that prioritises competence and experience over partisan considerations.
In a statement issued on Friday, the party chairman, Abraham Amah, congratulated Ikpeazu on what he described as a “well-deserved national assignment,” noting that the appointment reflects confidence in the former governor’s leadership credentials, governance experience, and dedication to public service.
The Abia PDP commended President Tinubu for identifying and entrusting capable Nigerians with responsibilities that advance national interests globally, irrespective of political affiliation. The statement said the move demonstrates a leadership approach that rewards merit, fosters inclusive governance, and strengthens Nigeria’s diplomatic presence on the international stage.
“President Tinubu has shown through this appointment that national leadership must transcend narrow partisan considerations, mobilising the best talents Nigeria has to offer in service of the country,” the statement added.
The party described Ikpeazu as a seasoned administrator and accomplished leader whose experience in public office has prepared him for the delicate role of representing Nigeria abroad. During his tenure as governor of Abia State between 2015 and 2023, Ikpeazu championed infrastructural development, industrial promotion, and policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of citizens, the PDP noted.
“These achievements underscore his capacity to represent Nigeria with dignity, intelligence, and strategic foresight,” the statement said.

The party expressed confidence that Ikpeazu would leverage his experience, diplomatic tact, and leadership acumen to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Spain while advancing economic, trade, and cultural partnerships beneficial to both countries.
It added that the appointment is particularly noteworthy because Ikpeazu remains a prominent PDP leader, highlighting a rare bipartisan acknowledgement of competence and service in national leadership.
The Abia PDP pledged full support to the former governor as he assumes his new role, describing the appointment as a source of pride for Abians and an inspiration for leaders across Nigeria.
“With proven leaders given opportunities to serve, Nigeria’s voice on the global stage will continue to grow stronger,” the statement concluded.
