AS an advocate to end plastic pollution and promote sustainable environment, Ondo State Goodwill Ambassador for Environment, Ms Olapeju Olayemi, has embraced creativity on making fashion out of waste, thereby boosting safe environment.
Just last week, Ms Olayemi, who is also the organiser of World Environment Day Eco Fashion Week, brought this year’s show with zero-waste fashion competition judged by top designers to an end.
The zero-waste fashion competition took place in Akure, the Ondo State capital last Saturday, as part of the workshop of the 2024 World Environment Day Eco Fashion Week events that have been held across states since June, in collaboration with state governments.
Speaking during the event, Ms Olayemi said fashion plays a key role in achieving sustainable environment because it is the second polluting industry on earth behind oil and gas.
She stated further that the fashion competition was held in order to raise awareness and translate the values of environmental friendly fashion into tackling climate change.
She expkained that all the items used by the designers for the competition were from the organisation’s “Free No Waste Shop,” that designers have free access to in order to give new life to old clothes instead of sending them to the landfill.
Winner of competition, Miss Alabi Folakemi Abiodun, CEO of Eyinju Clothings, a multiple awards winner, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create and showcase her handmade products from waste polythene bags, adding that she was able to show how one can re-use and re-cycle plastic in glamorous and creative ways without any waste.
The first runners up, Mr Okusanya Segun, founder of Animal Whisperer Collections, who used the iconic Ghana-Must-Go in creative ways to make animal themed handbags, said his passion is to raise awareness to protect wildlife and use fashion as a podium to create awareness against plastic pollution.
