Getting a job opportunity abroad is a big dream for many Nigerians trying to secure a better future. When you finally scale through the initial stages and get invited for a work permit evaluation or interview, you need to be very careful.

Many qualified applicants ruin their chances simply because of avoidable errors during their screening sessions.

In this article, Tribune Online examines the critical mistakes you must avoid during a Canada work permit interview to protect your travel plans.

Giving answers that conflict with your documents

One major mistake applicants make is telling the visa officer something different from what is written on their submitted forms. If your CV or application letter states one thing, your verbal answers must match it completely.

According to immigration compliance reports, any mismatch in your job history, dates, or duties creates immediate suspicion and can lead to a quick refusal.

Failing to show strong ties to Nigeria

Many Nigerians make the error of showing that they have zero plans of ever returning home after their temporary work expires.

Immigration officers are trained to look out for your intent to leave Canada when your permit ends. You must calmly explain your family commitments, properties, or career future back in Nigeria to prove you are only going for temporary work.

Providing false information

Honesty is one of the most important aspects of any immigration interview. Avoid exaggerating your qualifications, work experience or language skills, and never provide false information about your employment or personal circumstances.

If your answers differ from what you submitted in your application, the officer may question your credibility, which could affect the outcome of your application.

Appearing clueless about your job offer

Another costly error is not knowing the deep details of the job or the employer sponsoring you. If the interviewing officer asks about your specific job description, salary, or company location and you stutter, it raises red flags.

Immigration blogs strongly advise that you study your employment contract and employer background thoroughly before stepping into any interview.

Suggesting you intend to break immigration rules

A work permit is issued under specific conditions. Avoid making comments that suggest you plan to work for a different employer, take on unauthorised employment or remain in Canada beyond the validity of your permit.

Demonstrating that you understand and intend to follow the conditions of your work permit is essential.
