7 essential tips for maintaining your suit

Having a suit is good, but having a good suit that’s worth keeping is even better. A good suit can be worn for important events, work, or just when you want to look nice.

You see, taking care of your suit isn’t just about making it look good, it’s also about keeping its shape and in great condition.

So, whether you’re a guy or a lady, putting one or two measures in place to care for your suit can help it last longer and always look good.

The following are seven tips for maintaining your suit and making your suit look awesome for any occasion.

1. Don’t wash it too much

You know that feeling that your clothes need to be washed because they somehow feel off, especially for no specific reason. Well, this might not be a good idea. Your suits can lose shape and shrink if you wash them too often.

What then should you do instead? Instead of washing it every time, try hanging it up to air out or clean small spots with a cloth.

Also, if washing cannot be avoided, you can take it to a dry cleaner who will do a good job.

2. Hang it properly

Another tip for maintaining your suit is to avoid treating them like regular clothes. Unlike regular clothes, suits should be hung, not folded, to maintain their shape.

If you are hanging it, ensure that you use a wide and strong hanger made from wood or padded clothes instead of thin hangers that can ruin the shape of your suit.

A sturdy hanger helps maintain the shape of your suit’s shoulders, preventing bending or stretching.

3. Opt for steaming instead of ironing

No one loves to see wrinkles on their outfit, even people who don’t love ironing. Using a hot iron on your suit can ruin the fabric. So, try steaming instead. It has a milder effect and will keep your suit intact.

This will effectively help you achieve the goal of maintaining your suit.

4. Store it properly

On the days when you’re not wearing your suit, you need to store it properly. So, ensure it’s not stale; it’s clean and smells fresh.

You can also keep it in a bag, preferably not a plastic bag, away from dust and sunlight.

5. Avoid sitting for too long

This one might be tricky, but it’s a great hack for maintaining your suit. When you sit for a long time, your suit is likely to get wrinkled and lose shape. You can move around at regular intervals, and when you sit, do it cautiously – avoid rough surfaces, don’t slouch, or sit on the edge of your suit.

6. Clean up stains promptly

If your suit gets stained, it’s advisable to clean it as soon as possible. In case yours is a tough stain, you can get a dry cleaner to wash it off.

However, don’t overclean or rub the stained spot for too long so you won’t ruin the fabric. That’s another realistic hack for maintaining your suit.

7. Travel with a garment bag

If you’re travelling with your suit, you’ll need a garment bag to keep it in shape. It will also help to protect it from dust, wrinkles, and sunlight.

Also, ensure you don’t rough-handle the garment bag and keep it as straight as possible to avoid wrinkles.

In summary, maintaining a suit doesn’t have to be difficult, by following these steps with a little care and discipline, your suit will stay fine, stylish, and great for any occasion.
