Tragedy struck along Osogbo-Ilesa road, Osun State, on Tuesday when a reckless driver driving a Toyota Camry car allegedly crushed to death two policemen, who were attached to highway patrol team, providing security along the route.
Tribune Online reliably gathered that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had earlier stopped the driver identified as Oluwamuyiwa Emmanuel for alleged traffic offence few metres to the Police checkpoint mounted by the highway patrol team.
A credible source informed our correspondent that “Emmanuel apparently thought that the FRSC team was chasing him for the alleged traffic offence and he drove at a high speed, thus crushing two policemen to death.”
The incident was said to have occurred around 8.30am very close to AKAD axis of Ilesa-Osogbo road and the two affected security officers were said to have died on the spot.
Emmanuel, who was driving the Toyota Camry car, popularly known as “muzzle” marked Lagos MUS 313 ET was subsequently arrested and detained at Ayeso “A” Divisional Police Station.
A security source, who pleaded anonymity simply gave the names of the killed police officers as Sergeant Hayatu and Sergeant Moshood Adesanmi, adding that “they were attached to the highway patrol team. It is an unfortunate and very sad incident”.
Speaking over the incident, Ilesa unit commander of the FRSC, Mr Samuel Oyedeji observed that “the driver was very reckless and bad driving attitude precipitated the untimely death of the two policemen”.
When contacted, Osun State Police Commissioner, Mr Fimihan Adeoye confirmed the incident, saying two of our men were crushed to death by a reckless driver along Osogbo-Ilesa road on Tuesday.
He stated, “It is true. I think it was a traffic matter case. The driver, who is a 23 year old boy has been arrested.”
