10 Lagos communities to experience power outage as TCN begins infrastructure upgrades

No fewer than 10 communities in Lagos State will experience power outage between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily, for eight weeks as Ikeja Electric (IE) announced the planned reconductoring of 132KV lines embarked upon by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), aimed at expanding the capacity to wheel more power.

These communities include Oregun, Anifowoshe, Ojodu, Magodo, Omole, Oba-Akran, Oke-Ira, Ogba, Omole Phase 1 and parts of Ikeja.

The Chief Technical Officer, Ikeja Electric (IE), Jide Kumapayi, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen said the upgrade by the TCN couldn’t have come at a better time as the capacity of most of the 132KV lines become limited due to time and usage culminating to inability to operate at full capacity.

According to him, TCN is currently embarking on the upgrade of 132 KV lines from Ikeja West to Ota, adding that the activity has been phased into four stages.

He said: “This is the second stage and TCN is upgrading the 132kv lines with more robust and sophisticated replacements which provide an opportunity to increase power evacuation for improved supply to customers as well as offering excellent conductor capacity which can withstand very high voltage.

“The upgrade which is set to commence on Monday, October 11, 2021, will affect customers within Oregun, Anifowoshe, Ojodu, Magodo, Omole, Oba-Akran, Oke-Ira, Ogba, Omole Phase 1 and parts of Ikeja, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily, for eight weeks.”

He also noted that the company’s technicians would be on standby to provide support wherever technical interventions are required for the duration of the upgrade, especially between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. when supply will be available to customers.

“Even though this is a TCN project, we owe our customers the duty to inform them of the situation because we interface with them on a daily basis. We believe it will be for the benefit of our customers at the end of the day and will also allow Ikeja Electric to invest more in our Network to improve power supply to customers under our network.

“So we want to appeal to our customers to bear with us as this exercise will be beneficial toward the improvement of power supply in our network,” he said.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to improving infrastructure and exceptional service to its esteemed customers, noting the company’s investment in facility upgrades and installations across its six business units as part of its mission of providing quality and reliable services to customers.
