Nigeria’s Federal Government has been given a pat on the back over the proposal to introduce tollgates on major highways, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano route, for maintenance purposes.
The commendation was made by the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) describing the development as healthy and desirable considering the current situation of the roads across the country.
The ZLP stated, “We support the initiative, as stated by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to ensure the roads are properly maintained upon completion.”
“However, we express concerns regarding the proposed methodology of collecting tolls using POS machines, which may lead to traffic congestion, security threats and inconvenience to citizens,” It added.
It added, “In light of these concerns, the ZLP urges the government to reconsider the collection methodology and explore alternative solutions that prioritize efficiency, safety, and citizen convenience.”
“We call on the government to engage stakeholders and experts to develop a more effective and citizen-friendly toll collection system,” as contained in a statement signed by Amb. Khalid Arewa National Publicity Secretary, ZLP made available to Journalists on Sunday.
