Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a renewed effort to end the ongoing war, following recent diplomatic moves involving United States President Donald Trump’s special envoy.
Zelensky’s appeal came on Thursday, shortly after Trump confirmed that his envoy, Steve Witkoff, had held talks with Putin in Moscow. Trump described the discussions as “highly productive,” even as the U.S. government maintained its stance on imposing sanctions on nations engaging in trade with Moscow.
In a social media statement, Zelensky revealed that he had a phone conversation with Trump, who expressed readiness to meet with Putin “very soon.” According to Zelensky, several European leaders were also part of the call.

“We in Ukraine have repeatedly said that finding real solutions can be truly effective at the level of leaders,” Zelensky stated, adding that it was important to determine an appropriate time and agenda for such a high-level meeting.
Zelensky further disclosed that he had scheduled a series of discussions throughout the day with key European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as officials from France and Italy.
“There will also be communication at the level of national security advisors,” he said.
Emphasising the urgency for peace, Zelensky reiterated that the onus lies on Russia to take meaningful steps toward ending the war it initiated.
