The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps on Monday issued a warning to motorists against reckless and uncoordinated driving during the festive season to prevent road accidents.
The South-West Zonal Commander of TRACE, Mr Adekunle Ajibade, gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota.
He said the advice was necessary, stressing that “life has no duplicate.”
Ajibade stressed that motorists should get enough rest, warning that driving while drowsy can be hazardous.
“We urge motorists who are travelling to look for a safer place to rest whenever they are tired.
“They should also ensure that all vehicle components, especially the brake system, are functioning well, and reduce their speed because speed kills,” he said.
He also urged motorists to strictly follow traffic laws, avoid drunk driving, and cooperate fully with TRACE and other agencies, stating their compliance will ensure safety and smooth travel for everyone this festive season.
The warning comes as Nigeria’s festive season typically sees a surge in road accidents, often caused by increased traffic, driver fatigue, speeding, and reckless driving, leading to more crashes and fatalities.
Tope Oseni, Ijoko Unit Commander of TRACE, also gave advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun.
Oseni explained that the warning was urgent, as traders—mostly women—were stubbornly selling on the road, blocking traffic, and making TRACE’s job a nightmare.
“We are appealing to them to find alternative means of selling their goods to ease free flow of traffic, especially along Ijoko under bridge,” she said.
The unit commander urged traders to stop selling their goods on the highway so that their lives would not be put in danger.
Oseni also admonished tricycle operators against reckless driving, so unnecessary loss of lives could be prevented.
She added by advising motorcyclists to always have crash helmets and to refrain from overloading, in order to prevent crashes, saying that collaboration with relevant stakeholders would continue, to have the road made safer for the motoring public.
