Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has accused former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of making donations for political purposes rather than out of genuine generosity.

In a statement on X on Monday, Omokri argued that Obi’s record of giving was tied to his presidential ambition, contrasting it with instances where President Bola Tinubu had made significant donations long before seeking the presidency.

He cited examples such as Tinubu’s role as the first and largest donor at the launch of the Kanu Heart Foundation in July 2000, his ₦200 million contribution during the COVID-19 lockdown, and a ₦50 million donation to victims of the Katsina Central Market fire in 2021.

Omokri maintained that political donations are not genuine acts of charity, insisting that truly generous people give without a political agenda.

He wrote, “The Presidency Is Not For Sale

“Can you name one instance when Peter Obi began donating BEFORE he decided to run for president? Donations made because of a political agenda are not generosity. They are all part of a campaign.

“Please fact-check me: Twenty five years ago, on Friday, July 21, 2000, when Kanu Nwankwo launched the Kanu Heart Foundation, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was the first and the biggest donor. He was not contesting an election then.

“When Nigeria was on #COVID19 lockdown, Asiwaju Tinubu donated ₦200 million. He was not contesting an election then.

“When there was a fire at Katsina Central Market in 2021, Asiwaju Tinubu donated ₦50 million. He was not contesting election then.

“There are dozens of other massive donations Asiwaju Tinubu made long before he contested the Presidency.

“Political donations are not genuine or charitable. Generous people donate money and materials without an agenda, not when they are contesting elections!”
