DR Peter Obane, a gynaecologist at Calvary Estate Hospital, Benin, says yeast infection in pregnant women could lead to other complications during the second trimester.
Peter said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Benin.
Yeast infection occurs when the normal levels of acid and yeast in the vagina are out of balance, which allows yeast to overgrow causing an uncomfortable, but not serious, condition.

“If a patient has never been diagnosed or treated by a physician for a yeast infection, and have some of the symptoms, you should see your physician.
“Yeast infection is common in pregnancy because your body is going through so many changes.
“It is difficult for a woman’s body to keep up with the chemical changes in the vagina,” he said.
He explained that there is more sugar in vaginal secretions on which the yeast can feed, causing an imbalance which results in too much yeast.
The gynaecologist said the symptom includes discharge that is usually white/tan in colour, similar to cottage cheese and may smell like yeast, redness, itching and irritation.
Others are irritation of the lips of the vagina, burning sensation during urination or intercourse.
He, therefore, warned women against unhealthy living during pregnancy and also to watch out for the symptoms.
