The National Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has called on its members from the six geo-political zones to participate in political activities side by side with their medical profession.
This was made known by the newly elected president of the women medical doctor’s association, Hajiya Zainab Kwaru Idris while reading the communique issued at the end of its 2024 national biennial conference and scientific meeting held in Kaduna on Thursday.
The biennial conference with theme; Global Health, Ethics and transformative Leadership in Charging the World, held at Yar Adua hall Murtala square in Kaduna saw 500 registered participants coming from the six geo-political zones.
The communique said the objectives of the conference were to share scientific knowledge among members and the general public and also create a platform for members to network and discuss issues that impact women and childrens’ health.
“Some of the recommendations that emanated from the discussion include that members should be more IT Savvy.
“Members should seek leadership positions wherever they find themselves and make positive changes in the political World. The need to strengthen mentorship in the medical world was emphasised.
“Doctors should develop non-medical skills for survival. Addressing barriers to vaccine uptake to ensure successful roll-out of the measles/rubella and HPV vaccine.
“The need for multidisciplinary involvement and capacity-building in the management of Gender Based Violence. The next administration should re-activate a healthy campaign on women’s right to health Information.

“The need to adopt a multi-sectoral approach towards tackling nutritional needs of pregnant women and children.
“The need to leverage technology to improve leadership in health across all ministries. Government ownership of the MNCH framework and also male involvement in RHC strategies.
“There were over 1200 consultations and over 1300 medications served for acute and chronic ailments. More than 35 obstetric scans were performed, 80 cervical cancer screenings, 327 eye-glasses given, over 200 packs of nutritional supplements provided to children, 30 cataract surgeries and 9 minor surgeries done. 20 patients were referred for further care”. The Communique said.
