THE Adamawa State Police Command on Saturday gave details of how a woman burnt the hands of her stepchildren, who were three and seven years old, for eating the rice she cooked for their father.
The state police command disclosed the development on its X handle, saying the woman, whose name was given as Rachel Geoffrey, aged 23 years, a resident of Federal Housing Estate, Girei Local Government Area of the state, was arrested by men of the command after the incident.
She was said to have gotten married to the father of the children after the separation of their mother from the man.
According to the command, she cooked rice, kept it for her husband, and then went out. However, the children, who were hungry when they came in, decided to eat the food kept for their father.
When she came back and saw that they had eaten the rice, she became enraged, tied their hands, and thereafter set fire to the hands, causing them to sustain serious injuries.
It was gathered that the cries of the children attracted the attention of neighbours who alerted the nearest police station. The police operatives raced to the scene where the woman was arrested while the children were rushed to the hospital.
The command wrote: “Most worrisome is the recent incident in which she cooked rice and kept it for her husband who happened to be the father of the victims and then went out. The hungry kids ate their father’s food.
This angered her. She tied their hands and set fire to their hands, resulting in the severe injuries they sustained.”
In the photographs posted by the police command, the children were seen with their right hands heavily bandaged, just as the command said the woman would be charged in court after the investigation.
