Why UNIJOS electricity supply was disconnected – JOS DisCo

The management of Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) Plc has stated that it disconnected the University of Jos over cumulative debts of over one hundred and twenty-six million, five hundred and forty-one thousand, twenty Naira, and seventy Kobo (N126,541,020.70) Naira only.

It also decried the activities of some students of the University of Jos who, in protests, invaded the premises of the company and barricaded all the entrance points, thereby disrupting the business activities of the company.

In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Friday Elijah, Jos DISCO, said the protest, according to the students, was a sequel to the electricity disconnection in the university by the management of Jos Electricity Distribution Plc over their deliberate refusal to pay for their consumed energy over the years.

“Yes, it is a truism that the company disconnected the university for refusing to pay for their consumed energy.

“In April 2024, the University owed Jos Electricity Distribution Plc cumulative debts of over One Hundred and Twenty-Six million, Five Hundred and Forty-One Thousand, Twenty Naira, Seventy Kobo (N126,541,020.70 M) Naira only.”

According to the statement, several disconnection notices have been issued to the institution to persuade them to pay, in addition to several face-to-face discussions, but the management of the university refused to pay.

It pointed out that, in the face of the university’s deliberate and blatant refusal to pay, the only option left at the disposal of the company was to disconnect.

“This has become imperative because the company also pays for energy that is supplied on behalf of its numerous customers.

“Jos Electricity Distribution Plc, as a responsible juristic personality, is not unmindful of the interests of our students, who are our future leaders, but the management of the university must help to defrost their debts to enable the company to remain in business.

“Due to the intervention of the Director of the Department of State Service and the attendant respect that Jos Electricity Distribution Plc placed on him, management has decided to restore supply for the time being.”

Jos Electrical Distribution, who said the company is not a Father Christmas, stated that the university must commence a tangible process of offloading the debts or else the institution will be disconnected again.

It, therefore, urged the students of the ivory towers—UniJos—to channel their grievances to the management of the University of Jos for quick resolution.
