Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claimed on Saturday that no governor would join the party due to alleged intimidation.
The ADC said serving governors are facing intimidation, preventing them from defecting to other political parties.
Speaking at the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG) in Abuja, Abdullahi suggested that some governors are being compelled to endorse rival presidential candidates despite their preferences.
“No serving governor would be willing to cross over because of the intimidation that they are facing,” Abdullahi stated.
“We know what they are doing to them. Some of them who cannot jump to their party are saying we are endorsing their presidential candidate. No problem. But what you are seeing is a conspiracy against the Nigerian people.”
Abdullahi’s comments come amidst a dynamic political landscape where various reports suggest a realignment of forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ADC has recently emerged as a platform for a new opposition coalition, attracting figures from other major parties but no governor has join the party.
Recall that former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday, said Governor Ademola Adeleke is under pressure to join the APC but insisted that such a move would not be supported by the people of Osun.
Adeleke, the governor of Osun, recently publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as his preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Although the primary reason given for this endorsement, as stated in the communiqué, dated July 21, 2025, is the recognition that Osun State is the ancestral home of President Tinubu, which “makes the President the son of Osun State.”
Last Sunday, the PDP issued a communiqué stating that “the majority of the members of the APC in Osun State are opposed to the idea of the defection of Governor Adeleke to the APC, which did not originate from the governor in the first instance.”
The communiqué confirmed that Adeleke will remain with the PDP and plans to contest in the 2026 governorship election under this party.
