United States President, Donald Trump, has declared a decision to revoke his predecessor, former President Joe Biden’s security clearance, citing a report labelling Biden as having “poor memory”
According to Trump on Friday, there is no essence for the former president to have his access to classified information, adding that his daily intelligence briefings will be stopped.
“There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
“Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden’s Security Clearances and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings.”
However, while Trump claimed he’s revoking Biden’s security clearance to deny him access to classified information, the practical effect of the decision remains questionable. CNN stated that former presidents typically have no security clearances. They only have access to all classified information as president and automatically lose such when leaving office.
Meanwhile, Biden made the same move to restrict Trump’s access to intelligence briefings four years ago, citing his “erratic behavior” before and after the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
According to Trump, Biden set a precedent in 2021 by instructing the intelligence community to limit his access to national security details after leaving office, describing it as an unfair action.
Trump further argued that a former special counsel, Robert Hur, in his report, painted Biden as a forgetful commander-in-chief who failed to properly protect highly sensitive classified information.
“The Hur Report revealed that Biden suffers from “poor memory” and, even in his “prime,” could not be trusted with sensitive information,” Trump wrote.
Trump, who sarcastically declared, “Joe, you’re fired,” ending with his signature slogan, “Make America Great Again” stated that he would prioritise protecting national security.
