The Benue State House of Assembly suspended four of its members for three months over an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh.
The suspension was enacted on Friday during a plenary session.
The suspended lawmakers are: Mr. Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North; Mr. Cyril Ekong, representing Oju 2; Mr. Abu Umoru, representing Apa and Mr. Shimawua Terna, representing Kyan.
According to a motion of urgent importance moved by the Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, the lawmakers were suspended for attempting to “unsettle the state assembly with what he said was a needless crisis.”
Tiseer stated that the affected members had gone behind the scenes to mobilize others to cause chaos in the House, despite a recent vote of confidence passed on the leadership.
Following the suspension, the House also made changes to its leadership, with Mr. Kennedy Angbo emerging as the new Deputy Majority Leader and Douglas Akya taking on the role of Deputy Chief Whip.
Also, Elias Audu was appointed as the new spokesman for the House, replacing Alfred Berger.
The assembly also began the screening of five commissioner nominees on Friday, though two of the nominees, Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza, will be screened at a later date.
